Email Marketing Fundamentals
Why email is the income multiplier most social creators ignore — and how to build a list, write welcome sequences, and convert subscribers into buyers.
What You'll Walk Away With
The fundamentals of email list building, your first lead magnet, a welcome sequence structure, and why email consistently converts at 2–5x the rate of social media — regardless of how big your following is.
From Katherine
The day I understood email was the day my online business became real. Not because it was complicated — it's not. Because an email list is the one digital asset you actually own. Instagram can limit your reach. TikTok can ban your account. Your email list is yours. Every subscriber chose to hear from you directly. That's a different relationship than a follower who might see your post if the algorithm decides to show it.

Why Email Converts Better Than Social
Email marketing consistently converts at 2–5% (meaning 2–5 out of every 100 subscribers take action on an offer). Social media conversion rates on the same audience typically run 0.1–0.5%. That's a 10x difference — not because email is magic, but because of intent. Someone who gave you their email address actively chose to hear from you. Someone who scrolled past your post might not have even noticed it consciously.
Email List Building System
1
Choose a platformKit (formerly ConvertKit) is the standard for creator email marketing — has a generous free tier. MailerLite is a strong free alternative. Start on the free tier of either.
2
Create a lead magnetA free resource valuable enough that someone will exchange their email address for it. PDF guide, checklist, template, mini-course, resource list. One specific problem, one specific solution.
3
Create a landing pageWhere people sign up. Kit and MailerLite both have free landing page builders. Your landing page needs: a headline naming the benefit, bullet points of what they get, and a single email sign-up field.
4
Drive traffic to the landing pageLink in bio. CTA in Reels. Story swipe-up (if you have the feature). Every piece of content that teaches something can end with: "I made a free [resource] on this — link in bio."
Your Welcome Sequence (The 3-Email Minimum)
When someone joins your list, the next 72 hours are the most important. They just trusted you with their inbox. Your welcome sequence sets the tone for everything that follows.
The 3-Email Welcome Sequence
1
Email 1 (Immediate): Deliver + ConnectDeliver the lead magnet they signed up for. Then introduce yourself — briefly, personally, specifically. Why you do this. What you've been through. What they can expect from being on this list. One sentence CTA: "Hit reply and tell me your biggest challenge with [topic right now."
2
Email 2 (Day 2): Pure ValueYour best tip, framework, or insight — no ask. Purely generous. This email proves that signing up was a good decision. It's the email that gets forwarded to a friend.
3
Email 3 (Day 4): Soft OfferShare a resource, product, or recommendation that naturally extends the value from Emails 1 and 2. This is your first income touchpoint. Not a hard sell — a natural next step. "If you want to go deeper on [topic], here's what I'd recommend."
Prove You Got It
Create a free Kit or MailerLite account today. Write your lead magnet concept (just the headline and 3 bullet points of what it includes). Then write Email 1 of your welcome sequence. By the end of this exercise you have the beginning of the most valuable asset in your online business.
Say It Out Loud
"My email list is mine. Every platform can change its algorithm — but nobody can take my list."
