Authenticity IS: Sharing your real perspective. Admitting when something didn't work. Using your actual voice and vocabulary instead of what you think sounds professional. Showing the process, not just the highlight reel.
Authenticity IS NOT: Sharing everything about your life. Manufacturing vulnerability for engagement. Abandoning professionalism. Posting raw, unedited content for the sake of seeming real. Performing relatability.
The test: is this something you would say to a friend who asked you this question directly? If yes, post it. If you're saying it because you think it will perform well, it will feel like performance — and audiences sense that.
You don't have to share everything to be authentic. You just have to be real within the things you choose to share. Define your content perimeter before you start: what topics are in, what are off-limits, and where the line is between personal and private.
A helpful framework: share the lesson, not the wound. If you went through something hard, you don't have to share the details while you're in it. You can share the learning after you've processed it. This protects you and still gives the audience something real and valuable.
Write a caption about a mistake you made in your career or in building your online presence. Write it honestly — no performance, no redemption arc forced into it. If the mistake hasn't resolved yet, say that. That kind of honesty is what people share. It's also what they buy from.
